Luncheon Planned to Open the Liz Hair Nature Walk on Little Sugar Creek Greenway

Hundreds of people from across the state are expected to attend an invitation-only, southern-style lunch from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, June 14.  The event will celebrate the opening of the Liz Hair Nature Walk on Little Sugar Creek Greenway.  Currently, 3.6 miles of the Little Sugar Creek Greenway are complete.  Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation officials expect that it will take 10 years to develop the entire 15-mile trail.

The Liz Hair Nature Walk on Little Sugar Creek Greenway is located between Morehead Street and East Boulevard, in front of Carolina's Medical Center. It is the first named section along Little Sugar Creek Greenway and serves a model for future public-private partnerships.

Liz Hair was influential in the early Mecklenburg County greenway movement.  Ms. Hair was the first woman elected to and the first woman to chair the Mecklenburg County Board of Commissioners.  During her term as a Mecklenburg County Commissioner, Ms. Hair noted the need to preserve open space in order to compliment the growth in Charlotte-Mecklenburg.  Ms. Hair will be available to meet with the media at the event.

Speakers include Chairman Parks Helms of the Mecklenburg Board of Commissioners, Joe Cogdell of Partners for Parks, Betty Chafin Rash of the Friends of Liz Hair and Brenda McClymonds of the Trust for Public Land.   At approximately 12:40 a group of children from The Children's Miracle Network will present Ms. Hair with a bouquet of flowers in appreciation for her efforts to preserve open space and protect the environment.  The Mecklenburg County Greenway Team will offer educational tours of the Liz Hair Nature Walk on Little Sugar Creek Greenway.  Participants will learn about stream restoration and landscaping techniques that were used for the project.

The event is sponsored by Carolinas Medical Center.  The Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation Department, Partners for Parks and the Friends of Liz Hair will host the event.

Little Sugar Creek begins north of uptown and passes urban, residential, suburban and rural areas. It ends at the South Carolina border.
